CAMRA urges pub goers to have their say on English smoking ban
Mike Benner, Chief Executive:
“Banning smoking only in pubs that serve prepared food is crazy and means pubs will be forced to choose between banning food or banning smokers. The impact will be fewer pubs serving food and those pubs that do not serve food will become dominated by smokers.
“Turning smaller community pubs into smoking dens will benefit no one and we believe pubs with more than one room should be able to welcome smokers and non-smokers alike”
“The Government should listen to the views of pub goers, who are the real experts on the pub environment.”
CAMRA is calling on pub goers to support its proposals to allow multi room pubs to set aside one room for smokers and to make their views known to Government by emailing smokefreelegislation@dh.gsi.gov.uk”

CAMRA News: Black Gold, Cairngorm Brewery Named Champion Beer of Scotland 2005
Jennings buys Shady Oak
The history of the pub can be traced back to 1841 and rests on the edge of Goyt Valley known as the honey pot area of Derbyshire. Peter McKinnon takes over the mantle of lessee for the first time but has been part of the Jennings family for sometime and has gained over 20 years of experience in the business working in pubs and restaurants in the Lake District.
"This would sound like great news if only we did not already know that Jennings is to be taken over by W&D. Lets hope there is a good range of Jennings ales made available"

PeopleSoft: The Real Ale Analogy At The Register
Thirty years ago, Britain's pubs were dominated by a handful of major breweries. For some reason that escapes me, these companies seemed to believe that what British drinkers wanted to drink was bland beer that was fizzy and tasteless. From the brewer's perspective this had the distinct advantage that you could not tell one company's product from another's. This had the corollary that the biggest brewers would continue to dominate the market because there was, effectively, no choice...

Branch Meeting Last Night
News of a new brewery opening in Glossop, Howard Town Brewery Limited, not too many details as yet but apparantly the plant is being fitted by Dave Porter.
Interesting story about Boddingtons which is brewed at Hydes in a completly separate brewing plant (A scale version of the original), housed in an leanto open to Manchester weather, next to the Hydes brewhouse. This is staffed separatly by Interbrew staff in their own uniforms and they are not allowed to sample any Hydes beer on-site after work!
No Opening Times available yet for May!, its about time they changed the publication date a month ahead.
Next Branch Meeting (AGM) - 12:30 on 18th June 2005 at Ramsey's Bar Buxton.

Help keep Jennings Independent!
The famous Jennings Brewery in Cockermouth, Cumbria is under serious threat of takeover by Wolverhampton and Dudley Breweries. Despite their assurances to keep the brewery open, CAMRA believes that the takeover will eventually lead to the loss of the brewery and less choice for consumers. Help us to convince W&DB that their offer is not popular with beer drinkers and their customers. We will pass on your views to force W&DB to withdraw their offer and keep Jennings independent.
